Support Habitat at the Alternative Gift Fair

This year, give a gift that truly keeps on giving…like a chicken for Central American villagers, or food for a homeless Upstate family, or medicine for a wounded animal.  The Alternative Gift Fair is an opportunity to honor friends and family with donations to worthy causes, instead of buying more “stuff” to clutter up their closets.  Then, present them with lovely cards describing their gifts.  For those on your list who require actual “stuff,” there will also be a 10,000 Villages festival sale of handcafts.

Come celebrate a less stressful, more meaningful holiday on Sunday, November 23, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Greenville Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1135 State Park Road.  For more information, call 864-370-3493 or visit http://greenvilleuu.org/altgift/  Alternative gifts range from $5 to $100 and are all tax deductible.

Come Build with Habitat for Humanity
in Memory of Derek

Derek was a member of Southside Fellowship and had attended Southside Christian School where his brother Kenneth graduated and now volunteers.  Derek loved God, his family, friends and his dog, Chipper.

Eager to make new friends, Derek never met a stranger and always gave everyone a chance. He enjoyed every day to the fullest, spending time with friends going to movies or riding four-wheelers as well as with his family working in the garden and going to the beach. He was an outdoorsman and an excellent skeet shooter and loved deer hunting. He loved to play drums and enjoyed listening to music.  For Derek, giving to others, especially of himself, was a very important guide throughout his short life.

He had found helping others made you feel good, and he was known as the one you could call on for help.  He loved to make you laugh and had once written a note “show me a frown and I’ll turn it upside down.”  He had big plans for all the fun he wanted to have with his new little nephew, son of his sister, Amanda and Carl Fehr of Charleston.

One of Derek’s unrealized dreams was volunteering his time and talents to build homes with Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County.  Habitat for Humanity partners with families in need and community volunteers to build decent, affordable housing.  Habitat offers healing, hope and homes for families in need.  These homes, in greater sense, can offer individuals a “new life.”

The Ledford Family would like to fulfill Derek’s dream of building a Habitat Home.  They would like to invite Derek’s classmates, family friends and their co-workers to be a part of this special occasion, a Habitat home built by all those who loved him.

Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County thanks J.L. Mann for selecting Habitat as the recipient of 2008 Spirit Week funds.

This year’s Spirit Week, JETTZONE, was dedicated to four former J.L. Mann students who lost their lives in October 2007.  In the spring of 2009, J. L. Mann students and Habitat for Humanity will build new homes in memory of Travis Cale, Taylor Cothran, Emily Yelton and Justin Anderson.
