Habitat for Humanity Laurens County

For 20 years Habitat for Humanity of Laurens County used an all-volunteer team of dedicated board members working with the community to create affordable housing across our area.

However, as the demand for more housing opportunities increase, it became to expand the home building and renovation efforts in Laurens County. That is why Habitat for Humanity of Laurens County decided to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County in 2023 to expand services.

Under this new agreement, Habitat of Laurens County now has a full-time staff member for the first time under this plan, which allows us to offer more for the people of Laurens County. Ben Barron, a South Carolina native, serves as the Director of Operations for Laurens County.

Habitat Greenville was chosen as this new partner because it went from a completely volunteer team to a mission-driven organization with a full-time CEO in 2009.  Since then, Habitat has doubled the number of homes it has built each year; started doing renovations to existing homes; increased fundraising; and have been honored numerous times for their dedication to creating affordable housing solutions.

Our goal is to get people on the path to homeownership. We do this by being part of the local community and understanding its needs. Each local Habitat’s family selection committee selects homeowners based on three criteria:

Habitat’s homebuyers invest hundreds of hours of their own labor, called sweat equity, working alongside volunteers and other Habitat homeowners, in addition to paying an affordable mortgage and receiving financial education.

In addition to new construction, Habitat also renovates existing homes in many communities, particularly in areas such as Laurens. For now, our main focus is on doing repairs for homeowners in need.
